As They Did

Tone [C]

I wish [F]I could have seen it [C]just as they did

Lookin [G]over God’s country sittin [Am]top of a [G]ridge

By the [F]seat of a horse or an [C]old wagon train

On [G]that sea of prairie settin [Am]sail ‘cross the [G]plains

[F]Chasin the sun, headin [C]westbound for more

[G]Out where the mountains and the [Am]eagle do [G]soar

Wish I’da [F]seen the Missouri, be[C]fore she was dammed

Before the [G]sod was all busted and the [Am]train laid its [G]tracks

When the [F]range was still open and [C]free from that wire

When the [G]law was your own and [Am]guns were for [G]hire

When the [F]great herds were plenty and the [C]Sioux followed close

They still [G]danced round their fires, and the [Am]pipe was still [G]smoked

But [F]now all I see is a [C]canyon that’s paved

And them [G]faces they carved on [Am]rocks that God [G]made

The [F]lights of the sky ain’t just [C]moon, sun, and stars

And [G]their promised land some[Am]how became [G]ours

[F]Ohh what I’d give [C]just for one glimpse

At the [G]West that once was and the [Am]way life was [G]lived
